Football betting fans were put off by the careless play of the Pittsburgh Steelers last year as they paid out a pathetic 5 times in 16 NFL betting matchups. Football betting oddsmakers were more put off by the off season reports about Ben Roethlisberger who will be suspended for the start of the NFL betting season. 
Roethlisberger confronted accusations of sexual abuse for the 2nd sequential year and even though no charges were filed he was roasted in the press and by disgusted supporters. The quarterback was wanting to put it all behind him by focusing on NFL and has had a fantastic training camp.
But he did not see action, much as he needed to, in the Pittsburgh Steelers preseason starter.
Pittsburgh obtained a 23-7 win over the Detroit Lions and covered the NFL odds as 3-point home favorites as the game went under the total of 33.5. The Pittsburgh Steelers will play at the giants on August 21 in their next preseason matchup.
The competition with Detroit was damaged by monsoon like rains that delayed action for well over an hour. Byron Leftwich was ineffective vs the Lions, and he’s planned to start in place of Roethlisberger throughout his 6-game regular season suspension.
Third string quarterback Dennis Dixon was the most successful signal caller for the team as he threw for a touchdown as well as connecting on a bomb that set up an additional score. Dixon might have been the happiest Steeler in the starter as he said, “I’m having a blast.” Hometown fans, who ultimately started chanting “We want Ben, We want Ben” as Leftwich struggled, were undoubtedly not booing Roethlisberger that day.
“With the number of snaps we anticipated the first offense running, it just wasn’t appropriate to play him,” said Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin. “He wanted to play. He’s had an awesome training camp.” Tomlin was of course not pleased with the results of the first offensive unit, and that will be a problem with the Pittsburgh Steelers ability to beat the NFL lines. Since Tomlin was hoping the unit would start to click, Leftwich got 2 times the amount of playing time than was supposed, even though it never did.
“We weren’t really clicking,” claimed Leftwich. “We did some things not so good, but we’ll work on it.” It could be a genuinely huge issue since the future of the 2010 season for the Pittsburgh Steelers is going to rely heavily on Leftwich. He might leave Roethlisberger with a string of losses to make up for when he rejoins the team later this season if he can not gel in his performance with the rest of the team. The harder Roethlisberger is going to have to work to compensate with the more games the Pittsburgh Steelers lose up front. But if Leftwich can pull this off and maybe get a few victories early on, then Roethlisberger can step into a team that’s already on a roll and moving along nicely into their 2010 season. It is plenty of responsibility for Leftwich to accept.
