After his horrible NFL wagering results with Carolina a year ago, NFL wagering oddsmakers were ready to write off quarterback Jake Delhomme. Football wagering dynamics might be changing, nevertheless, as Delhomme is now with the young Cleveland Browns as he seeks to jump start his career in the 2010 NFL wagering year.
Delhomme got off to a good start with the Cleveland Browns in their preseason opener at Green Bay as they defeated the Packers 27-24 on a last second Phil Dawson field goal of 46 yards. Dawson earlier nailed a 57 yarder to tie the game in the 4th quarter.
“It’s preseason, it doesn’t count,” said Delhomme. “But hey, everybody has a smile on their face.” Delhomme directed the Cleveland Browns to a touchdown in his only drive of the match as Cleveland covered the NFL prospects as 3-point longshots.
It’s hoped that Delhomme will bring consistency to the quarterback position that’s been absent for many years in Cleveland. Over and above that the Cleveland Browns are a young squad and could use veteran leadership and instruction that Delhomme can provide. Delhomme has led by example with his standout professionalism and attention to detail.
Cleveland’s Josh Cribbs, a receiver and returner that has regularly been viewed as their only weapon, was satisfied with Delhomme’s debut. “I was just amazed at how quick he picked up on the offense and he just was boom-boom-boom in his reads,” said Cribbs. “You see the veteran play in him. It’s very promising.” Delhomme ended the game 6-7 for 66 yards. Backup quarterback Seneca Wallace, who passed for 2 touchdowns, was just as impressive.
“Everybody offensively did a great job,” Wallace said. “From what I saw last year on film, it’s totally different. They’re very eager to get better. We’re moving in the right direction and that’s what you want. A lot of guys who want to get better.” Mike Holmgren, the new Cleveland Browns president, could build a hidden gem with the NFL lines. He understands what it takes to turn losers into victors since he has been a part of past rebuilding efforts in Green Bay and Seattle. The Browns have a new and improved attitude for 2010 that could be translated into enhanced NFL wagering value.
Coach Eric Mangini is putting an emphasis on the new start, according to Cribbs. “We’re not the old Browns,” Cribbs stated. “We’re a new team, refreshed, new quarterback, new president, new everything and we’re ready to play some football.” Delhomme was signed by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent back in 1997. He helped take the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2003 after he signed to the squad. He was released in March of this year after several up and down years with the Panthers, including the 2009 year where he was placed on a season-ending injured reserve in December. A few days later he signed a two year deal with the Cleveland Browns. Because Colt McCoy won’t be playing this year, Delhomme will be competing with Seneca Wallace for the starting quarterback job. Delhomme is hoping to aid the Cleveland Browns come back from a dismal 5-11 record in 2009.
